Basilica of St. Nicholas

73 Prins Hendrikkade

Easily spotted on Amsterdam’s skyline is the Basilica of St. Nicholas, with its grand dome and towers rising just outside the Central Station. The incredibly ornate architecture and interior came after centuries of oppression of Catholics. When the ban on Catholicism was lifted in the 1800s, the church was lavishly built with marble, gilding and stained glass. Inside, just below the rose window, you’ll find a massive 19th-century organ that is one of the church’s prized pieces.
