Katherine's Barunga Festival
Katherine's biggest annual event, Barunga brings together locals, foreigners and the traditional owners of the land to celebrate art, music, dance, sport and the sharing of stories, culture and food around campgrounds—both literal and metaphorical. Unlike many festivals with Aboriginal "performers", this is a home-grown effort to connect people and encourage participation, despite language and cultural barriers, through unique programs such as sport. The festival was the historic site where the Barunga Statement was enacted in 1988, which inspired the worldwide hit "Treaty" by Yothu Yindi. Other big names including Missy Higgins and John Butler have taken the stage at past events.
