Eat Local

Rain or shine, the Ballard Farmers Market offers some of the Puget Sound’s finest local products every Sunday, from 10am-3pm. Tents line up with the season’s freshest fruits and vegetables along historic Ballard Avenue, which is transformed into a pedestrian promenade during market hours. Local seafood, meats, and dairy products are also staples at this diverse community bazaar, as are hand-crafted clothing, jewelry, and home-decor. Food trucks and stands are also intermixed with the vendors in order to attend to your stomach as you work up an appetite wandering through the stalls. You’ll find anything from cooked-to-order tamales to mini-donuts still warm from their dip in the fryer and dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Dante’s Inferno Dogs will serve you up a hot dog “Seattle-style” with cream cheese, grilled onions, and a toasted bun. If you’re a cream-cheese hot dog virgin, once you taste it you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing it this way all along! I recommend throwing on a little sweet-chili sauce for a little extra kick. While you’re meandering down Ballard Ave, be sure to pop in and explore the neighborhood’s local businesses, as you’ll be sure to find something more unique than the tedium of retail chains and big-box stores. And don’t forget to pick up a $5 market bouquet of fresh-cut flowers grown by the local Hmong community, who farm in the rural Snoqualmie Valley agriculture production district located just 40 minutes outside Seattle’s urban core.
