Cooking with a Real Balinese Family, in Their Home Compound
Our guide's Mom tried to teach us how to make these simple split palm frond baskets, which cooked up the softest, most succulent rice I've ever had. We made chicken kebabs (mashed chicken and fresh spices), corn fritters, a green jello-like dessert and fried baby fish, all after a tour of the family compound 400' above the Ayung River. What being Balinese means? Planting teak trees when you're a child so that by the time you're in your 30s they are large enough to cut down to build your new home.
