So this is the spot that the “It’s a Wonderful Life” theme really takes off. True fact, in 1917 there was a young local man who jumped off this bridge in an attempt to save someone from drowning in the icy waters. Unlike the Jimmy Stewart character in the film, this hero didn’t survive. But that hasn’t stopped the community from dedicating the bridge to the memory of the movie’s protagonist. There is a plaque on site giving honor to the original jumper, but the name on every townsperson’s mind when the bridge is mentioned….is George Bailey. Christmas finds the bridge decorated in angel shaped lights, reflecting again the movie’s plot.
In any season the bridge provides a relaxing perch over the canal. Views in both directions are beautiful. The Lodovico Sculpture Trail entrance is just at the end of the bridge and Antonina’s is a tasty spot to grab some energy, just a stone’s throw (literally) away from both.
