Tents on the Baie des Anges
After a trouble-filled start (snow delays, lost luggage, cancelled hotel room), we finally landed in Nice. Such a relief! And such a splendid greeting for the eyes, everything drenched in the most exquisite color. The sky, even with clouds, was a brilliant blue. The buildings along the palm tree-lined Promenade des Anglais are the colors of Jordan almonds, with shades of saffron predominating. The horseshoe-shaped beach overlooks the appropriately named Baie des Anges, where stunning aquamarine water along the shoreline deepens to a rich royal blue as it merges with the Mediterranean. Strolling along the beach, we saw a cluster of rounded tents in beautiful jewel tones—befitting the setting. As we looked on, several policemen approached the tent dwellers. Although we held our breath, fearing that this tranquil scene would be undone by a show of force, no such thing occurred. Instead, it was handshakes all around. The tableau was left undisturbed.
