Yemin Orde Youth Village, Ethiopia
The Sigd in motion
The Sigd is an Ethiopian Jewish holiday that symbolizes the acceptance of the Torah 50 days after Yom Kippur. In Ethiopia, the community fasts and walks to the highest point on a mountain where they read Psalms and remember their desire to return to Jerusalem. To break the fast, they descend to the village to feast and rejoice. This photo was taken in 2010 at Yemin Orde Youth Village where twelfth-graders take the role of priests and lead the procession to the synagogue.
