The first Merlot vines in Ticino were planted on a hillside in Malcantone, just a couple of kilometers above Ponte Tresa and Lake Lugano. Today, this idyllic location is home to B&B Vallombrosa, which welcomes visitors to enjoy the region's wine traditions in a home-like setting. The B&B shares the terraced hillside with Tenuta Tamborini and four hectares of vineyard.
The friendly inn-keepers are eager to share their love of Ticino and knowledge of local sights with their guests (in several languages). Apero-time is under a sprawling umbrella in front of the wine shop, and offers a chance to taste wines from prize-winning vintner Claudio Tamborini as well as other wines from the Malcantone area. Our Vallombrosa hosts were happy to recommend several good grotti (traditional Ticinese restaurants) nearby.
Each room at Vallombrosa is dedicated to a different artist (our room featured works by Antonio Lüönd), and works of art are placed throughout the vineyard. A bust in the garden pays homage to Dr. Giovanni Rossi, original owner of the property and the man responsible for bringing Merlot to the region.
Highly recommended for atmosphere and a comfortable, laid-back style. And good wine!
