In Sintra, taking a taxi was the best choice I could have ever made. Daniel, a local resident who has lived in the area for years with his family, picked us up me and my mother up. We told him we wanted to go to a great restaurant in Sintra, and he told us our best bet was outside the city center since it is such a draw for a tourist crowd. His amazing knowledge of the area and command of English made Daniel into our tour guide for the day. But we were starving, so the first stop was lunch.
Azenhas Do Mar is a wonderful restaurant between Lisbon and Sintra. The simply prepared fish and mushroom risotto we enjoyed was enhanced by the smell and sight of the sea. There are great views from within the restaurant, but we chose a seat on the outdoor deck - feeling the spray of the ocean waves as we enjoyed a glass of the house white. The meal wasn't the cheapest we had in Portugal, but it was certainly one of the best.
Daniel's stories about his country and insider tips to experiencing the area so enriched our experience.
