Avenida de Mayo

Avenida de Mayo

Thanks to some smart city planning, Buenos Aires features a few Parisian-style boulevards—wide and beautiful, lined with trees and elegant architecture—that beckon travelers to take a leisurely stroll. The loveliest are Avenida de Mayo and Avenida Alvear. The former connects Plaza del Congreso and Plaza de Mayo, and features many of the city’s most famous architectural landmarks: The massive Palacio del Congreso is at one end, and the famous Casa Rosada at the other; in between is Palacio Barolo, inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, and the venerable Café Tortoni. The latter traverses the heart of the ritzy, old-money Recoleta neighborhood, and offers access to the glamorous Alvear Palace Hotel and leafy Plaza Francia.

On most weekends, the city government sponsors festivals on Avenida de Mayo — the section closest to Plaza de Mayo, on the eastern side of Avenida 9 de Julio — honoring different cultural groups with live music, food, crafts, and entertainment. Pictured here: Bolivian performers preparing for a parade on a Saturday festival honoring immigrant groups in Buenos Aires. Check the cultural calendar online, or just wander down Avenida de Mayo on a weekend afternoon.
