Audium Theatre of Sound-Sculptured Space

San Francisco, CA, USA

An evening at the theater takes a trippy twist when guests sit in total darkness and listen to “sound sculptures.” The auditory event is more like meditation than performance, and sounds such as synthesized tones and bubbling stream sounds range from dissonant to soothing, and move around the audience via 176 speakers embedded in the walls, floors, and ceiling. The theater looks like a relic from a 1960s space-themed movie set, and the overall effect is at once surreal, fantastical, calming, and odd. The 45-minute odyssey is not for everyone (especially those afraid of the dark), but if you’re looking for something unique to San Francisco, if not the world, the $20 entry (cash only) is worth every penny. The “concerts” take place every Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
