Despite its official name, the Auckland War Memorial Museum is as much about New Zealand
in peacetime as it is about memorializing lost soldiers. The collection of Maori and Pacific Island treasures includes a war canoe and a 14th-century carving, while the war memorial galleries cover the country's role in conflicts from the 19th century to the present day. Additional galleries show the history of New Zealand from a natural and cultural perspective. The neoclassical building overlooks the Auckland Domain, a large and leafy park that makes a pleasant detour on the way back downtown.
