Navigating Auckland's WesterliesA number of good sailors in Auckland can masterfully navigate the changeable westerly trade winds. Visitors often overlook the islands just off the Auckland coast. Two of my favorites are Waiheke Island and Kawau Island. Waiheke is a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland and has some beautiful beaches, plus very nice vineyards and wineries to visit. The ferry for Kawau leaves from Sandspit Wharf, about 90 minutes from Auckland. Kawau feels wilder than Waiheke, and people go there to hike for the day. —Sir Russell Coutts
