Located outside Athens not far from the airport, this privately run zoo opened in 2000 as a dedicated bird park. But it’s since evolved from being the world’s third-largest bird collection into a full-fledged zoo, complete with big cats, primates, reptiles, sea mammals, and lots of endangered species all living in sensitively created habitats. Humans here also enjoy the lovely landscaping and café. For kids that need a break from archaeology, parents who are secret (or not-so-secret) bird watchers, or families with a few hours of layover time, the Attica Zoo is a somewhat unexpected diversion open 365 days a year. Check the website for events like Reptile Awareness Day or Greek Wildlife Weekend.
