This huge cemetery is the biggest green space in the increasingly fashionable Nørrebro area. It’s the final resting place of some of the greatest Danes of all-time, including Nobel Prize-winning physicist Niels Bohr, philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard and designer Finn Juhl. Perhaps its most famous resident and most visited grave is that of author Hans Christian Andersen, who died in 1875 at the age of 70. The grave is surprisingly plain for a man whose beloved fairytales—which include The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Emperor’s New Clothes—were so fanciful.
