Dubai was long an entrepôt between Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia, both in terms of commerce but culture as well. With the annual Art Dubai
fair, held each March, it continues to fill this role. In 2014, the event hosted 85 galleries and welcomed over 25,000 visitors. Unlike many other international art fairs, Art Dubai is a showcase for the leading contemporary artists of the region—roughly one-third of the artists represented are from the Middle East—though leading galleries in the United States and Europe are also represented. It is also different from some other comparable art fairs in its welcoming size. Careful curation assures that visitors see only the best works by the world’s leading artists.
