30 minutes outside of Barcelona, Spain, Montserrat (literally meaning "serrated mountain") offers spectacular views and an enormous sense of peace and tranquility. Montserrat is the site of a Benedictine monastery where a small group of monks still live and work today practicing St. Benedict's three principles of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The views alone are worth the trip, but the Monastery and Basilica are beautiful as well. Many newlyweds come here to see La Morenata, a statue of the Black Madonna, and to touch the orb she holds in her hand. Don't miss the vendors near the train station selling local goat cheese...delish!
