ArlbergSome isolated parts of Austria's Vorarlberg province were not really conquered until recently with modern roads and tunnels. In summer, the high-altitude Zürsersee lake appears has a fairy-tale like emerald hue. It's fitting, then, that the Green Ring circuit trail is dedicated to local stories of mysterious creatures and witches, with related art installations along the route. Take a cable car to the Rüfikopf peak for a themed hike through geologic time periods to learn about fossils and ancient marine sedimentary rocks. Along high trails, such as those above the Verwalltal valley, there's a good chance you'll spot ibex and chamois as well.
