Arachova 320 04, Greece
Adventure is Here- Ski, Swim, Hike Arachova GreeceDuring our tour of the Gulf of Corinth in Greece, we stayed in the picturesque mountain village of Arachova at the base of Mt. Parnassos. Arachova is the perfect jumping off point for outdoor adventures like hiking, mushroom hunting or skiing. Mt. Parnassos is also the largest ski area in Greece. You can find outfitters in the town of Arachova, along with boutiques, cheese and pastry makers with products only made in Arachova. The cheese maker in town produces a cheese known as Formaela, which is designated as a protected product. Only cheese produced here can be named this. Be sure to try this cheese when visiting, it’s delicious grilled with lemon. Lodging is available in town, but we stayed at the boutique hotel Skamnos about 6 miles from the center of town. http://www.skamnos.com/eng/index.html. Privately owned and operated, this beautiful hotel feels very remote, and yet is only a short drive to Arachova. Our room was large and well appointed, with panoramic views of the countryside. The hotel has an indoor pool, so weather is not a factor if you want to get in your daily swim. The overall feeling is cozy and comfortable, and if you didn’t know better you could imagine being in Austria or Switzerland.
If history and culture are your thing, the ancient site of Delphi is a short drive away. I highly recommend visiting this site, as it is considered the center (navel) of the earth according to Greek mythology. The museum here is a must see; the ancient artifacts on display are so well preserved, it’s hard to imagine that some are thousands of years old. Although we were in the mountains of Greece, the beaches are never too far away, in fact you can take a easy drive down to the beach town of Itea, or go a bit farther to one of my favorites, the small harbor town of Galaxidi. Arachova is a well-hidden mountain gem of Greece, take the time to explore it, hike it, ski it, walk it. Greece is so much more than beaches and crystal blue waters, and the town of Arachova is one of its glistening gems.
