Head to Apple Country
The apples are plentiful and flavorful in the West Texas Panhandle Plains town of Idalou, known as "Apple Country." With over 6,000 trees, and a long growing season, the area's apples have the time to ripen up perfectly and develop a delicious flavor, so come out ready to get up in the trees and pick your own. Or, you can purchase pre-picked apples from the country store, where there is also a bakery, country cafe and gift shop with just about any recipe variation that an apple lover could dream of, from German Apple Cake to freshly-brewed cider. In the fall, there’s the annual Apple Butter Festival, with a BBQ lunch, hot, fresh apple turnovers, a lady bug release in to the orchards, and loads more family fun.
