Aoshima Island

Cross the bridge to this pretty little island and leave the clamor of the city behind. Ringed by white-sand beaches, Aoshima Island hides two tranquil shrines in its jungly heart. The larger of the two, Aoshima Jinja, is believed to bring good fortune to married couples, so it may be worth a stroll inland for a visit. At low tide, the waters around the island pull back to reveal weird parallel ridges of basalt, naturally eroded furrows of stone, that the locals have nicknamed the Devil's Washboard.
