Antofagasta Historic Center

Having become rich from maritime trade and mining, Antofagasta’s leading citizens installed themselves in fine European-style manors, many of which remain in the city's historic center. With its clock tower reminiscent of a small Big Ben, Plaza Colón is filled with fountains, flowering plants and palm trees, while a modest neo-Gothic cathedral faces the square. The attractive two-story, U-shaped customs house is today a museum, with displays on archaeology and natural and local history.
