Semana Santa Parade in Antigua
One of my favorite places to visit is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Antigua, Guatemala. Antigua was the ancient capital of Guatemala and is filled with ruins, cobblestone streets, markets, coffee shops, and some of the most interesting people in the world. On my last trip, I arrived in time for the Catholic celebration of Semana Santa...leading up to Easter. Each day for a week, the streets are filled with parades, floats, sawdust carpets, and people as far as the eye can see. This photo touched me as I found it hard to believe that girls as young as those in the picture could carry a float this big. I later learned that it is considered a great honor to have a place carrying the float and that the girls rotated every few minutes to be able to handle the float. Such dedication to a belief is an amazing thing to witness.
