As shrapnel from exploding firecrackers hit my face and head, I ducked for cover but was still able to fire-off my camera. I wasn't prepared for the blinding flames and deafening sound of fireworks as the effigy of the devil was set ablaze. Every December 7th in Antigua, Guatemala a 30 foot high statue of the devil is set on fire (Quema del Diablo). As per tradition, the devil lurks in garbage and under furniture of one's home. Thus, the burning of trash and unwanted objects cleanses the home of evil and starts the year anew. This event also marks the start of the Christmas season in Antigua.
