Hollywood has a surprisingly large nature park, that offers miles and miles of waterways for paddlers. Anne Kolb Nature Center and West Lake Park make up no less then 1,500 acres, offering paddlers approximately 10 hours of exploring three well-marked mangrove lined trails, dozens of unmarked trails, and three miles of protected open water. Best of all? No powerboats are allowed here!
I went out to paddle with a bunch of people, and we were fortunate to have the best guide possible, Dom Coscia, a true caretaker of land and water. Together we explored a few of the trails. We saw a number of birds, just hanging out, watching us closely, but not really afraid of us. It was meditative and restoring to paddle through these quiet waterways at our own pace, after so much cross country traveling before.
A typical Florida downpour surprised us, and within a few hilarious seconds we were completely drenched. That didn't put a dent into the experience, we never got cold, and hey, it's a water sport, right?
