Strolling through Ankamall a few days ago, I stumbled upon a really cool exhibit in honor of Piri Reis, the Turkish cartographer. UNESCO and the Ministry of Tourism are celebrating the 500th anniversary of his map charting the Mediterranean and surrounding continents. You can sip tea in the makeshift gift shop which has 3 intricately created wooden ships and a semi-realistic figure of Piri Reis overlooking a map among various gadgets, figurines and map themed trinkets. Step into the black curtained cube where video projections of his journeys are reflected on the wall and ceiling. Though the place was filled with energetic kids stomping at sea creatures on the floor, I was able to step back into time when a man had the insight that the world wasn't flat.
