Just 15 minutes by taxi north of the city is one of Sardinia's most important prehistoric sites, the Anghelu Ruju necropolis. Here an outcropping of rock was hewn into seven chamber tombs by the Ozieri people between 3400 and 2700 B.C.E. There are 31 more tombs in the small hill behind the main site. Alcoves in the walls would hold food and useful items for the journey into the afterlife, and bull's heads and horns can be seen carved into the entrances.
