When Hyatt’s luxury resort brand, Andaz, went looking for an architect for a new project occupying 28 ocean-front acres on the northwest shores of the Bay of Culebra, it turned to one of Costa Rica’s most noted talents, Ronald Zürcher. Zürcher’s organic approach to design most strikingly takes the form of the rooflines of many of the buildings, shaped like shells and cocoons found on the local beaches and jungles. Even the standard rooms in the resort—spread over a hillside with separate beaches at both ends—exude luxury, with hand-carved artifacts, forest or resort views, and walk-in rain showers that open to large balconies. Suite upgrades include soaking tubs and private plunge pools. For the actively inclined, there’s a golf course, tennis course, and access to nearby zip-lining. Or lounge by the large pool with views of the bay (there’s an adults-only infinity pool as well). Ostra is the resort’s signature restaurant, with a focus on fresh seafood. Chao Pescao offers tapas and small plates, a first-rate mixologist, and live music and dancing on Saturday nights.
