Andaz PapagayoEven on a rainy day Andaz Papagayo delights with stunning rooms, unique food and craft cocktails. And when the sun is out there are multiple pools, a private beach with free SUP boards and kayaks plus cool amenities like complimentary hats to take home. It’s also very family and dog friendly.
The design is impressive, at once modern and back to nature, and blends into the environs perfectly. It is the creation of a Costa Rican architect inspired by organic animal shapes, and rooms and public buildings are airy and textural, with a mix of woven reeds, lots of wood, pebbles and larger stones. We love the indoor/outdoor spaces in the 153 rooms and suites, which feature shower doors opening onto private shaded terraces and floor to ceiling windows looking down onto the jungle, lining one wall.
There are multiple restaurants on site. At night, we liked Chao Pescao, which features tapas style dishes including excellent fresh tiraditos as well as delightful seasonal cocktails and live Latin music. Also check out the spa, which has some innovative local treatments.
The Andaz is located about an hour from the international airport in Liberia and transport to and from is straightforward. If you want to explore beyond the peninsula, however, consider booking with a local tour company like Namu Travel that can arrange seamless transfers, lodging and activities in other parts of Costa Rica, Nicaragua or Panama. A perk to using a tour company is that all your costs, like private transport, guided tours and even meals, can be included in the price you’re originally quoted at booking, so you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for in advance and not have to worry on the road.
