From afar Ancoramar (previously known as Albamar) doesn’t look like a restaurant, but rather, like what it was: an octagonal tower crowned with a cast-iron and glass dome, the remaining one of four such towers that stood at the corners of a former market, demolished in the 1960s. This curious dining room, one level up, was all that was left standing. The room, surrounded by windows, offers views over Guanabara Bay and so couldn’t be a better setting for a seafood restaurant. If possible, order the catch of the day (which isn’t on the menu) or try a seafood risotto; white wine washes it down nicely.
