For anyone who likes beer and appreciates how it's made, with a little local history on the side, the Anchor Brewing Company guided tour is a not-to-miss San Francisco experience. The tour starts out in the right place—in the taproom. Here you'll get your first taste of Anchor Steam beer accompanied by some backstory of the company, its founders, best-selling brews, and the answer to the question: What is "steam" beer? A guide then leads you over three floors, offering a blow-by-blow of the brewing process that lets you touch and smell the hops in burlap sacks and snap photos in front of the gleaming copper stills. Ultimately you end up back in the taproom for a sampling of several more Anchor "varietals." On the way out, hit the gift shop for some steam gear and other souvenirs, then head across the street to the Anchor Beer Garden, open Thursday–Sunday. Tour reservations are obligatory. Guests under 21 are welcome to tour but not taste.
