Jernbanetorget 2, 0154 Oslo, Norway
AmerikalinjenWhy we love it: A 100-year-old building gets new life as deluxe hotel.
- Prime location on Jernbanetorget Square in downtown Oslo
- A design informed by the former Norwegian America Line cruise ship headquarters
- The glass-ceilinged and plant-filled inner courtyard, aptly named Haven
Housed in the former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line (Amerikalinjen) cruise ship company that dates back to 1919, this 122-room Preferred Hotels & Resorts hotel diligently pays homage to its past. With a design inspired by the building’s decorative maritime trimmings, soaring vaulted ceilings, ornamental moldings, and grand staircases—which were all preserved—rooms feature reproductions of furniture like Veng, an armchair designed by Torbjørn Bekken in 1960 and pendant lamps by classic Norwegian glassblowing company, Hadeland, who also provided the ship’s original glassware. The Norwegian America Line’s former boardrooms have been turned into spacious suites with original ornate ceilings.
After returning from a day of exploring Oslo, stop by the spa and try its rain forest showers, Finnish sauna, and heated mosaic beds. And be sure to sample each of the hotel’s five bars and restaurants. Atlas is an all-day brasserie that serves an eclectic blend of European favorites, like oysters Rockefeller or steak tartare, while its more casual café corner offers healthy options like soups, salads, and traditional Norwegian waffles topped with fresh avocado, herbs, pickled onions, and eggs. Haven is in a glass-covered courtyard in the center of the building and is ideal for whiling away the hours with a coffee. Named after the iconic New York pier where ship passengers landed, Pier 42 is a cocktail bar featuring drinks inspired by significant events that took place between 1919-2019 in both Norway and America. Last but not least, Gustav is a lively jazz club in the hotel’s basement.
