14th century wooden architecture in Kandy

To many a visitor to Sri Lanka, a stop in Kandy is essential - primarily to visit the famed and hallowed Temple of the Tooth Relic. If you have time, do spare a half day to visit three unsung but beautiful 14th century Buddhist-Hindu shrines located within a half hours drive from Kandy.

'Gadaladeniya', 'Lankatillaka' and 'Ambakke' stand as mute testament to the attempts made by King Buvenekebahu IV to integrate the two communities by offering places of worship under a single roof.

Ambakke, is the most beautiful of them all, the highlight being the drummers' hall with intricately carved pillars depicting musicians and ancient instruments, dancers in lithe movements, men, women, birds and beasts framed in floral designs.
