Munkkiniemi is a neighborhood thirty minutes away from Helsinki with the tram; it's very exclusive, sophisticated and very green. Once densely populated by pine trees, the pines were replaced by leafy greens as the neighborhood developed. Lots of elderly intelligentsia walking about. Alvar Aalto's spirit amongst them.
Any fan of Aalto should not miss this, although anyone interested in a well-designed house should also be enlightened. The house tour is well worth the 30 minute tram ride, and approximately 17euro fee. It is highly personal, with generally no more than 4 people. The home is very welcoming, you cannot help but feel that you are a welcome guest, and if Alvar was there, he would invite you to have a cup of coffee and visit for a while.
