After this little creature was banded for the annual bird count, it rested peacefully in my hand. Then, with just a slight tip of the wrist, off it flew to resume its own agenda for the day.
Friends of ours have a cabin on the lake near Alpena. (Lots of rental cabins nearby, too.) The friends are some of the the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable birders I know. He’s been known to screech to a halt, whip out a scope and a tripod to catch a glimpse of some rare or gorgeous bird. Oh, the excitement!
There are lots of amateur and accomplished birders in the Alpena area for good reason...lots of birds! Our friends took us to beautiful shoreside areas one of which was a bird flyway. That’s where a net was set to gently and temporarily capture birds until they could be counted, banded, recorded and released. It was all new to me, but the experience opened a whole new world to explore.
