Alpargatería La Concepción

Carrer de la Concepció, 17, 07012 Palma, Illes Balears, Spain

You may have had a pair of espadrilles on your list of souvenirs to bring back from Mallorca even before you arrived on the island, or you may have decided to buy a pair after arriving and finding yourself jealous of locals and other travelers sporting the classic summer beach shoe in a range of hues and patterns. First, some things should be cleared up: The Spanish word for the shoes is alpargatas, not espadrilles, and they are, in Spain at least, more associated with nearby Menorca than Mallorca. In any case, you’ll find them for sale at various stores from ones catering to the cruise-ship passengers in port for only a day to high-end boutiques.

One of the best selections, however, can be found in a humble shop, to the north of Avinguda Jaime III on Carrer La Concepción: Alpargatería La Concepción. The small store consists of one front room stacked to the ceiling with alpargatas, as well as other very reasonably priced shoes and beach bags produced in the Balearic Islands. There’s a smaller though still extensive selection of shoes for men, mostly alpargatas though with some other casual choices as well. You can expect to pay from around $15 for a basic pair of alpergatas to double and beyond for ones with sturdier construction, more durable fabrics, and unusual designs.
