Southern Tradition: Pig Pickin' Cake
Southern Tradition: Pig Pickin' Cake
Going to a barbecue joint as a vegetarian might sound suspect but getting a local feel is important. Grilled cheese & tomato plus fries are a great meal here. Eat outdoors, take away your food, or dine inside.

Don't skip dessert, which is either banana pudding (puddin') or pig pickin' cake. The cake was moist, with a tingle of the Mandarin orange flavor, and the frosting was thankfully not excessively sweet.

Nothing like soaking up southern atmosphere. Fit in by ordering sweet tea and indulging in local conversation (sprinkled with a few 'bless her heart' mentions--it can translate to oh, poor thing or oh, she's quite a shrew).

Pig pickin' cake makes an appearance on any southern menu that incorporates the food history of bringing all the sides and sweets to the cookout at which the pig was the main dish.

A cool observation here is that the clientele is a fun mix that includes diners in jeans and a t-shirt, overalls, or three-piece suit.

Hush puppies, barbecue, Brunswick stew, okra, and good fried may want to just order the cake to go.
