Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve

Herbert Heritage Dr, Stuart NT 0870, Australia

The Alice Springs Telegraph Station is situated on the first site of European settlement in Alice Springs. It was established in 1872 to relay messages between Darwin and Port Augusta, roughly 1700 miles away. It was also linked with an underwater network that traveled to London, forming the first line of communication between Australia and the UK. This is the best preserved of the 12 stations along the Overland Telegraph Line, and interpretive displays translate the many hardships faced by those who built and maintained this marvel of morse code. A walking and cycling track follows the Todd River through the reserve, and mountain biking paths also criss-cross the area. Hire some wheels and explore this rugged site, which was only serviced once per year.
