Breakfast and lunch reign supreme at Alexis Baking Company and Cafe, a bakery that doubles as a diner-style restaurant. Owner Alexis Handelman started the eatery as a wholesale bakery in 1985, then transitioned it into a retail bakery and café. The bakery is a local favorite, with breakfast items from pancakes and omelets to huevos rancheros and machaca. For lunch, popular fare includes havarti and other cheese sandwiches on walnut bread, juicy burgers, and fresh salads. ABC is one of the only bakeries in Napa to sell challah and other Jewish baked goods. It also is the only bakery in town with a variety of gluten-free options; Handelman uses grapeseed flour and oil for these items, and they taste surprisingly moist. No visit to ABC is complete without trying the signature lemon cake, which Handelman has nicknamed the “Best Damn Lemon Cake.” The moniker is apt.
