Quail Eggs Are the New Deviled Eggs at the Alembic

The Alembic’s pink quail eggs are pickled overnight in coriander, allspice, and clove. They’re tangy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and beg for a Sazerac or bitter beer. For more drinking tips, check out our feature "How to Drink Anywhere in the World" from the May 2015 issue.

Craft Cocktails in the Haight at Alembic Bar

Since this Upper Haight bar’s kitchen closed for a much-anticipated renovation and expansion early in 2014, regulars at the Alembic have had to make do with bar snacks and drinks—but not just any bar snacks and drinks. The upscale sister bar to Magnolia Gastropub & Brewery down the street, the Alembic is known for its ever-evolving, consistently innovative cocktails and is frequently listed as one of the best bars in San Francisco, or even in the entire country. Try a Bait & Switch (mezcal, Chareau aloe liqueur, strawberry, lemon, peppercorn syrup, and green strawberry bitters) or the Southern Exposure (gin, fresh mint, lime juice, a touch of sugar, and a little shot of fresh celery juice). Keep an eye on the website for the kitchen reopening. As for those bar snacks in the meantime? Get the pickled quail eggs. Alembic Bar is currently open Mondays through Fridays from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 2 a.m.

The Church of Cocktails

The bartenders at Alembic take their mixology seriously. As in "this has the essence of elderflower" in it seriously. I like the bar because on a rare Saturday morning when I need a little spicy alcohol kick that's lighter than a bloody mary, I order up a drink called a "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," which is pepper juice and gin, garnished with a crouton. I follow it with one of the best hot dogs in the city from their lunch menu and I'm good to go for the rest of the day.

Tasty Haight Street Food & Cocktails

The Alembic Bar is the perfect place to stop in for lunch and a drink when you're shopping on Haight Street.

We always get snacks like the pickled quail eggs and sumac potato chips with yogurt dipping sauce, a sandwich (I love the beer-battered rockfish), and a tasty, inventive cocktail, many of which you're not likely to find anywhere else.
