Aldeia de Mata Pequena
It's very difficult to overstate just what a spectacular job forward-thinking Lisboêta Diogo Batalha has done with Aldeia de Mata Pequena, a rural tourism masterpiece in the Mafra countryside about 45km northeast of Lisbon. Batahla has purchased and restored 13 ruined structures of a 300-year-old village and flipped them into fabulous, historically-accurate 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom stone cottages. His keen eye for detail means former wineries, barns and bakeries retain original elements: Stables-turned-living-rooms and massive grape presses or original salgadeiras (meat-salting boxes) as design centerpieces. It is an extraordinary place to stay and prices start at a remarkable €80 in high season. Get out of the city!
