The conical huts of Alberobello are too adorable. The oldest ones in Alberobello date back to the 14th century. The local legend says they were built in this way to easily dismantle the roof so as to avoid paying taxes. (no roof meant no home, which meant no property taxes). But more likely, they were built in this manner as there was an abundance of limestone in the area and also stay cool during the hot summers.
