Getting personal in the Costa Rican rainforest
Albergue el Socorro is more than a place to stay, it's an experience. It takes a little adventure to get there - a 6 hour bus ride from San Jose - but the scenery is stunning and I found the fellow Costa Rican passengers were quite friendly and shared stories about the towns along the way. Once we arrived, the owner, Don Jose, picked us up at the small market in the town of San Miguel. His family founded the tiny town of Virgen del Socorro up on the hill and he still lives there with his family. He has built 3 small cabins for guests and treats you like a family member when you arrive. Since he's spent his whole life there, Don Jose knows many trails and will take you on an awesome tour of the jungle that is his property. He also drove us to nearby waterfalls and pointed out all the unique flora and fauna in the area. We stayed for 3 days and would go back in a heartbeat. A wonderful, authentic Costa Rican experience. To make it even better, you'll need to know Spanish. Don Jose has been taking English classes, but there's more to appreciate if you can understand all his stories. Can't recommend this place highly enough.
