Alaska Indian Arts
13 Fort Seward Drive
Alaska Indian ArtsHoused in the former Fort Seward hospital building, this gallery celebrates the art of the Tlingit people and features a collection of silkscreen prints, silver bracelets and a carving studio where visitors can watch demonstrations by students and Native apprentices. Watch artists use an adze (an axelike tool for large cuts) and hook knives (for finer details) while carving a totem pole. Learn how totem poles, dancing and masks have been used to preserve and recount village histories. Visitors can also order a totem pole.
