Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve

Haines Highway

With more than 80 eagle nests, this 48,000-acre preserve—which includes portions of the Chilkat, Kleheni and Tsirku Rivers—has the largest concentration of bald eagles anywhere in the world. The most popular viewing area is located along the Haines Highway between mile markers 18 and 24 where bald eagles feast on spawning salmon in the Chilkat River. Another popular way to see the eagles, as well as bear and wolves, is to float on a large raft down the river, quietly observing the animals that come here.
