The term 'souq' probably conjures up visions of an elaborate system of alleys packed full of brass wares, camel traders, and hookah bars but this is not the case in the Emirates. While the fruit-and-vegetable market in Abu Dhabi may have lost some of its old-world feel, through the vendors that work here, it has retained its charm.
Merchants come from all over the globe to work here. They are more than happy to share a laugh or start a deeper conversation—the young man pictured here was able to leave Syria before tensions in his city got too high. The market is also located near the Mina Fish Market, and you will not meet friendlier people than you will find in these two places.
The market is located on the northeast corner of the main island just before you reach the bridge for Saadiyat Island. There really aren't any bus stops in the area so cabs are your best bet.
