The Minoan civilization that went up in smoke after the explosion of an ancient volcano lives on at the Akrotiri excavations site. Unlike the Spartan ruins of Thera, the archaeological dig at Akrotiri is covered with walkways so they are far more accessible for travelers who have problems exploring uneven ground. If looking at rubble and the site where ancient shards of pottery were recovered is not your thing, the treasures excavated here, including the famous Blue Monkey fresco, are on display at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera.
