Downtown, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Buzzing Mexico's Caribbean in a Charter PlaneNearly skimming the water, I feel we are about to land and forget we have wheels and not pontoons. We race along just above the clear, sea-glass blue. I can see the reef just beneath the surface and the rush of speed seems all the greater for the proximity of great mounds of stag-horn and brain coral.
Earlier we stopped at Aerosaab, the private airport on Playa del Carmen's south side, to see if we could schedule a flight. An hour later I was gripping my seat and the wind was buffeting the twin engine, six-seater as she climbed above docked ferries and palapa-roofed restaurants and soared out over the sea.
Hugo (pronounced OOgo) will fly you to Cozumel for lunch or or watch you catch your breath as he does a low pass over whale sharks off the coast of Holbox, an island just north of Cancun. Just tell him where you want to go.
To book a flight call (998) 865 42 25 from the U.S. But be warned, they may not answer the phone--you know, lunches and siestas and all. If you fancy a private charter with these boys, you are better off just stopping by and saying hi!
