Abu Manaratain Mosque, located in the southern town of Al-Wakra, one of the oldest cities in the state, was built in 1940. The mosque is worth visiting because of its unique features: Although ‘Manaratain’ means ‘two minarets’ the mosque only has one; the rectangular area where the mosque is built doesn’t have the high walls that characterize Qatari old mosques and has instead unusually thick walls to isolate the heat and keep the space cool; and the small pool where the ablutions once took place received its water from a well in the courtyard. This mosque is a must-see for Muslim architecture and history buffs. To get there from Doha, drive ten miles south to Al-Wakra, go through the town and at the second roundabout make a U-turn.
