Abraão

A sleepy and car-free fishing village that is now home to a plethora of pousadas and cafés, Abraão is Ilha Grande’s main town. The modest São Sebastião church dates from the middle of the 19th century; it was built for Emperor Dom Pedro II’s visit to the island in 1845. In the distance, within the State Park of Ilha Grande, the 982-meter-high (3,222-foot) Pico do Papagaio rises dramatically above Ilha Grande just as Sugarloaf does above the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. The peak truly resembles the head of a parrot, the inspiration for its name.
